Secrets of top captains revealed

SCOTT Hill may have picked the brains of some of Australia's best sportspeople for his latest book, however, he hopes it appeals to those from all walks of life.

The former Kangaroos and Melbourne Storm five-eighth's second book in the Sports Wisdom series, Secrets of Inspirational Captains Revealed, arrived in books stores this week.

Pelican Waters-based Hill said he and co-author David Becker had learnt a great deal from the launch of their first book, Secrets of Winning Coaches Revealed, last year.

He said the book had the potential to appeal to an audience beyond athletes and coaches.

Their first book has sold around 6000 copies and following a re-branding and second run with a new cover, the series has begun to gain traction in the wider community.

"It started to pick up I think once we changed the cover and added the digital user guides or digital development guides for separate markets," Hill said.

"When we started out we were strictly targeting parents or coaches, whereas now with the second cover and user guides, we're appealing to business leaders, school teachers, young athletes and students.

"I think we've found a way to help those niche markets. I think that's what we've done with those digital user guides, which has helped a lot."

For their latest book, Hill and Becker interviewed 12 of the country's most successful sportspeople, including Essendon Bombers legend James Hird, Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith, ironman Shannon Eckstein, basketballer Andrew Gaze, cricketer Greg Chappell, basketballer Lauren Jackson and rugby union's Nick Farr-Jones.

Hill said there were few common threads between the interviewees other than that they had developed into great leaders and had their own philosophies on sport and achievement.

However, he said many lamented not having a framework for developing leadership skills from a younger age.

"We want to give people a framework or a bit of knowledge on what is the journey to success," Hill said.

"What are the journeys to becoming a great leader? With the digital user guides, we want to be able to pass it on to young sports-people and business leaders, senior business leaders, anyone really that's in control of a team and wanting to go in the right direction towards success."
