AUSSIE pineapples are extra sweet and in abundant supply this winter, thanks to high rainfall and consistent weather, offering pineapple lovers a splash of summer during the chilly months.
Yeppoon's third-generation pineapple grower Ben Clifton said last week pineapples were available and tasted great all year round.
"Different varieties reach their peak at various times in the year but the two main season peaks happen in summer and winter. People are often surprised to learn it is a winter fruit," Mr Clifton said.
"It is also important for people to know that pineapples' skin colour differs throughout the year, depending on season and specific variety.
"A green pineapple doesn't mean it's not ripe. If the pineapple is in-store it's ready to eat."
According to Mr Clifton, growers are extremely pleased with the quality of the winter crop.
"We did come up against the elements in February with tropical cyclone Marcia but the fruit now looks as good as it tastes," he said.
"The cyclone initially impacted the appearance of some pineapples but the winter crop is full of shiny-looking fruit that tastes fantastic."
Dietician Joanna McMillan said pineapples were a healthy and delicious choice for winter, especially due to their immune-boosting benefits.
"Pineapples are an excellent source of vitamin C, important for a healthy, functioning immune system and manganese, important for bone health," Dr McMillan said.
"Pineapples are also a good source of thiamine, magnesium and vitamin B6, contain fibre and a phytochemical called bromelain."
