Search continues for Oura Beach swimmer

POLICE hope a Christmas Day swim will not end in tragedy.

New South Wales emergency services have resumed the search for a missing swimmer in the Murrumbidgee River at Oura Beach near Wagga Wagga.

The man disappeared late on Christmas Day when he and another man were swept downstream about 6.45pm.

Grave fears were held for the 25-year-old yesterday.

His companion, aged in his 20s, managed to reach the river's banks safely.

"The other man, aged 25, was swept away and has not been seen or heard from since," a NSW Police media representative said.

"Police were contacted and Wagga Wagga Local Area Command attended and commenced searching for the man, with the assistance of NSW Volunteer Rescue Associate.

"The man was not located and searching stopped on nightfall.

"The search resumed at 6am yesterday."
