SCU lecturer to face trial in Qld

SOUTHERN Cross University Law and Justice lecturer Dr Megumi Ogawa has been arrested and extradited by Federal Police to Brisbane for trial on charges of threatening to kill Federal Court staff.

Ogawa, 41, was arrested at her Park Avenue flat in East Lismore and appeared in Lismore Local Court on Monday.

She is charged with two counts of threatening to kill and two counts of menace and harassment at Brisbane in April and May, 2006.

Documents before Magistrate Jeff Linden stated police found Ogawa at her flat with a mental health worker on ‘a home visit’ from the Acute Care Service of Lismore Base Hospital.

An arrest warrant was issued by a Brisbane District Court Judge after Ogawa previously failed to appear.

Defence lawyer Vince Boss said Ogawa objected to the extradition.

He said the lecturer had applied to have the presiding Queensland judge disqualify himself from hearing her case.

Mr Boss said she had been told the matter was listed last Friday and Ogawa told the court registry she had no transport to get to Brisbane.

Prosecutor Sgt Peter Costin-Neilsen said Ogawa’s matter was listed as a three-week trial.

Mr Boss told Mr Linden a previous trial did not proceed because of mental health issues.

Mr Linden ordered that Ogawa be extradited to appear before the Brisbane District Court.

Japanese-born Ogawa has a colourful past that includes Federal Court proceedings against
Melbourne University over the conduct of a supervisor during an attempt to get her PhD, and a stint in Sydney’s Villawood Detention Centre in 2006 where she was held while being threatened with deportation.

She is the author of Protection of Broadcasters’ Rights.
