Scouts encourage recycling through grant-funded station

A TOOWOOMBA Scout group has refurbished its recycling station with the help of a Keep Australia Beautiful grant.

The Bunya Park Scout Group's new recycling station at its Mt Lofty property has a corrugated structure on a concrete slab, a tin-crusher and nine bins for collecting cans, clear glass bottles and coloured glass bottles.

Group leader Alec Brown said the Beverage Container Recycling grant funded most things but a recycling company provided the bins.

Mr Brown said a recycling company paid the group for what they collected but it was primarily about teaching the kids about recycling and the environment.

He said the kids collected recyclables from home and people in the area also contributed.

Scout Kiara Vandersee, 12, said it taught them about recycling.

"People don't have to put everything in the bin," Kiara said.

Fellow-scout Colby Parker, 12, said he liked using the tin-crusher.

Mr Brown said they had done it for several years on bare ground but needed something better so applied for a grant.

He said they received the grant last year then spent six months arranging builders and materials.

They also collected paper and wanted to do plastic bottles in the future.

He said they were making a flyer to distribute around the area encouraging community involvement in the recycling station.
