Scott has no plans to retire any time soon

NORTH Queensland warhorse Matt Scott believes he can follow in the footsteps of champion Queensland bookend forwards Petero Civoniceva and Steve Price and play well into his mid-30s.

Civoniceva, who holds the Origin record of 33 games for a forward, retired a winner in 2011 aged 35. Price pulled the pin two years earlier with 28 Origins aged 36.

Scott will play his 21st Origin on Wednesday night and believes his body has never been in better shape.

With veteran forward Corey Parker, 34, deciding next week’s Origin will be his 19th and last for Queensland, a number of other players over 30 will face similar calls in the coming years.

Parker is still regarded as one of the fittest players in the game but he did not want to take the risk of letting his teammates down.

“There’s no succession plan as such, if that’s what you are asking,” Scott said.

“There’s going to be a lot of personnel changes over the next few years.

“(But) we’re all still playing pretty decent footy.

“For myself I’m not going to give the baton over earlier than I have to.

“As long as I can continue to do my job for the team and I’m playing well, deserving selection, I’ll be putting my hand up.”

The veteran prop revealed he had spoken to his manager this week about a plan for his future and how many years he wanted to play for.

“I’ve had a bit of trouble with my neck and, touch wood, the rest of my body’s really fine,” he said.

“It’s holding up well. I’m doing everything at training, probably more so than I’ve done in previous years. If I can continue to train and the rest of my body feels good I don’t see there’s a reason why I can’t achieve the type of longevity guys like Corey, Petero, Pricey.”
