Scorchers end year with top victories

CRICKET: The Scorchers' one-day finals hopes have received a massive boost following a dominant weekend of fixtures.

The Coast outfit entered the Christmas break on a high after claiming three wins from three fixtures in the shorter formats of the game.

Solid knocks from Brendan Mahaffey, Kobi Griggs and Peter Dein on Saturday helped the Scorchers claim victory in what was the final regular one-day fixture of the season against South Brisbane.

They backed that up by winning their first T20 matches of the season on Sunday against Valley and Redlands. The Scorchers claimed double bonus points in the win over Redlands.

The results not only boosted confidence but elevated the Scorchers' chances of finals action.

"Winning three from three - it's a great weekend for us,” Scorchers player Alecz Day said.

"Winning yesterday (Saturday) put us right in contention for playing one-day finals cricket and then the two wins today (Sunday) probably helped confirm that. On top of that it just put us in a good place for T20 finals.”

Day said all batsmen chipped in over the weekend, with Rory Smith, who claimed 4-24 and 4-15 in the side's T20 victories, a standout with the ball.

"They're playing some good cricket and the confidence is high in the group,” he said.
