Schools' rugby kicks off today

RUGBY UNION: The first junior competition of the winter ball codes kicks off today at Coffs Harbour Rugby Park.

Coffs Open Schools rugby begins with many secondary schools from around the region taking part.

It’s the first instalment of the new North Coast junior program headed by local development officer Bruce Frame who has outlined an exciting 2010 schedule.

“For Coffs Harbour we have re-structured the junior competition to run on Friday nights,” he said.

“It will include both under-14 and under-16 boys and will offer the new 2016 Olympic sport sevens rugby for under-16 girls.

“Other changes taking place will be a new primary schools competition in term two and secondary comp in term three for Forster and Taree while in Port Macquarie, we have extended the strong junior competition to include under-16 boys.”

Another major event is the re-scheduled Tsunami Sevens on Wednesday, February 24, at BCU International Stadium.

“This was planned for last November but was cancelled due to tsunami-like rain,” Frame added.

“Last year we had 20 teams entered from all over the North Coast including six girls teams and will hopefully get them back, plus a few more.”
