School funds: private up, public down

FUNDING for public schools fell by $224 for every student in the five years to 2013, a new report shows.

The report by the Australian Education Union also showed funding rose at Catholic schools by $716 a student and by $574 for students at independent schools.

The report showed funding for public schools fell 1.9% between 2009 and 2013 and at the same time, private schools got an 8% increase.

AEU president Correna Haythorpe said the figures reinforced the need for the complete six years of Gonski needs-based funding.

While the Federal Government maintained funding for four years, when it came to office it cut the funding in 2017-18, instead focusing funds on improving teacher quality and school autonomy.

"The Abbott government must fund all schools on the basis of need, not political ideology, and that means honouring the full needs-based Gonski agreements," Ms Haythorpe said.
