Sawtell up for fifth cricket title

SAWTELL are on line for an unprecedented fifth straight cricket title after outstaying Park Beach Bowling Club Colts at Richardson Park at the weekend.

Just after 4pm yesterday, Ben Andrews put his side into the season decider with a touch of Philip Hughes-style theatrics, whacking a ball over the boundary for six.

Two deliveries before, he'd belted something similar to leave the Blue Caps poised to shatter the dreams of a plucky Colts side who in the space of a season, have gone from the pavement to the penthouse with a string of wonderful performances.

Colts ended day one at 8-120 with bowler Simon Landrigan causing them grief, and pushed that total on to 132 before Sawtell went out to bat.

But just after 1pm the premiers were in bother with four wickets down and just 56 runs on the board.

“I think we'll get there eventually but I'd rather it wasn't this tense,” club president Matt Bailey said at the time.

After cautiously dragging the total to triple figures, veteran Jeff Butterworth continued to play the sensible foil as youthful and flamboyant Andrews opened his shoulders with a string of fours and sixes.

“With 'Butts' solid up the other end, once we got to a hundred I decided to go for it,” Andrews said.

“It was a great way to finish it off.”

They will face Dorrigo in the main event next weekend at BCU International Stadium.
