Sawtell cricketers keen to win again

CAN Sawtell make it five first grade premierships in a row?

That's the question that will be asked on numerous occasions during the spring and summer months as the champions of Coffs Harbour District cricket attempt to further cement their place in history.

And with the lower grades going so close to scooping the pool during the 2007-08 season, Sawtell club secretary Wayne Smith said extra attention will be given to development so that the sun continues to shine on their achievements.

For the third season running, Sawtell have rotated the captaincy with Brad Lewis taking over from Gus Garland, who himself slipped effortlessly into the role long held by the evergreen Chris Neal.

Other clubs may struggle when taking such a radical departure but it has never seemed to hinder the momentum of the premiers.

“Our biggest loss is Ben Davis - he's gone up north for uni - but the depth in the batting order is still there,” Smith said.

“We've picked up Phil Crouch from Maitland and he's in the side for week one. Saw him in the nets and on what he showed, he couldn't be left out.”

Sawtell start their quest of 'five for' with a home match against the enigmatic West Coffs (Hotel) Tigers.

Their eagerly-awaited return bout with grand final opponents Northern Districts is locked in for round two on October 25-November 1 when the squad head north to face the Rebels at Woolgoolga's High Street Oval.
