Sawtell beats its bogey team

WHAT a difference a year makes.

Last year, Sawtell players were left lamenting the two losses to the eventual winners West Coffs that cost them any chance of winning the district grade two pennant.

As the 2011 season started on Saturday, Sawtell was celebrating a victory over its bogey team in what was another tight contest in the combined grade one and two competition.

Sawtell won two of the three rinks for a 5-1 result to start its 2011 campaign with an overall win by four shots.

It was business as usual for defending number one pennant champion Park Beach, which opened its campaign with a hard-fought 10-shot win over Coffs Ex-Services. In the other match, Park Beach (2) recorded a 5-1 win over promoted 2010 Grade 3 champion Urunga.

Nambucca Heads had the perfect start to its season in Grade 3 with a 6-0 win over West Coffs, while Park Beach crushed Sawtell 5.5-0.5 and Woolgoolga had the opening-round bye.

Nambucca Heads and Sawtell share the lead in grade four after both teams gained maximum points in their opening rounds, against Coffs Ex-Services and Urunga respectively. In the other match, Woolgoolga accounted for Scotts Head 5-1.

Grade 5 is split into two divisions. In grade 5 (1) Macksville and Bowraville had 6-0 wins, while in grade 5 (2) Park Beach and Woolgoolga started their seasons with 5-1 wins.

The early pace-setters in Grade 6 are West Coffs, North Beach and Park Beach, who all achieved 5-1 results in the opening round. Bowraville heads grade seven after an opening-round 5-1 win over Nambucca Heads.
