SAS veteran to be farewelled

SPECIAL Air Service veteran Sergeant Blaine Diddams will be farewelled with a full military funeral in Perth later today after he was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month.

Described as a "soldier's soldier", Sergeant Diddams was on his seventh deployment to Afghanistan when he was shot in the chest during a mission to hunt down an insurgent commander on July 2.

He was the 33rd Australian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan, but the first this year.

Sergeant Diddams will be farewelled today at a private family service at Guildford Grammar, followed by a full military funeral at Karrakatta cemetery.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the Chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley, are expected to join those paying tribute to the 40-year-old father of two, whom colleagues have described as "remarkable, selfless and dedicated".
