Saffin and Elliot miss out on spots in Rudd cabinet

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd has announced he will increase the number of women in his cabinet, but he has not found a place for two of his most loyal supporters; North Coast MPs Janelle Saffin and Justine Elliot.

With the resignation of many of Julia Gillard's senior ministers Mr Rudd needed to have a signi- ficant reshuffle and coming into the cabinet are Victorians Jacinta Collins and Catherine King, and Tasmanian Julie Collins.

The number of women with ministerial portfolios will increase from nine to 11, with further announcements about the new-look front bench expected today. The Northern Star was unable to contact Ms Saffin on Sunday, but Ms Elliot said she was not disappointed to miss out.

Rudd announces new ministerial line-up

"I've made it clear my priority is to the people of the North Coast and stopping CSG. It was a privilege to serve as Minister for Aging and then Parliamentary Secretary for Trade, but right here and now my main aim is on delivering for the people of the North Coast," she said.

Despite missing out on ministerial positions, it seems that the political fortunes of the two Labor MPs are looking much better. A Galaxy poll published in News Limited papers on Sunday showed 51% of respondents thought Mr Rudd would make a better prime Minister, ahead of Tony Abbott on 34%. However on a two-party preferred basis the Coalition is still ahead; 51% to Labor's 49%.

Two week's ago the two-party preferred margin was 55% to the Coalition, 45% to Labor.
