A MOTHER and her daughter narrowly escaped tragedy when a driverless tow truck smashed through trees and into their Alstonvale home this morning.

Susan O’Sullivan was helping Ciara, aged 8, get ready for school in the lounge room of their Pearces Creek Road house when she heard a loud noise about 8am.

She looked up to see the NRMA truck crashing through her garden and lunging towards the front of their house.

Mrs O’Sullivan grabbed Ciara and hurried her away before the truck hit the front verandah, damaging uprights and causing the roof to buckle.

The truck had been entering the property across the road when the driver, a 49-year-old man from Alstonville got out of the cab.

Police believe he forgot to apply the handbrake.

Ms O’Sullivan was shaken but unhurt.
