Rumour mill on
THE demise of Marlow Timbers has fuelled speculation that another national retailing colossus might now be tempted to establish one of its new hardware superstores in Coffs.
Woolworths has reportedly put plans in place to open 48 of the outlets across Australia, but a media spokesperson would yesterday neither confirm or deny rumours that one was on the drawing board for Coffs Harbour.
“That information is commercial in confidence,” she said.
“We have already revealed the location of 12 sites in Victoria where we are establishing hardware outlets, but where we intend opening in New South Wales is not something we want our competitors to know just yet.” The spokesperson said it could be a “few months yet” before Woolworths revealed it’s plans.
On Tuesday David Marlow speculated that his site in Orlando Street might be a perfect option for Woolworths.
“It’s a great site with semi-trailer access and no flood issues,” he said.
It would be ironic indeed if one multi-national was able to capitalise on the failure of a business who’s demise in part could be attributed to the category killing impact of another.
