RTA's two sets of road rules

IF EVER a double-standard on our roads will incense local drivers, this is it.

How many are aware of the two sets of rules that apply to highway use when it comes to private mobile speed camera cars?

The Roads and Traffic Authority has confirmed that contractors can park their vehicles wherever they like with ‘exemptions’ – like this vehicle parked ‘illegally’ near Short Cut Road, Raleigh last week – and then ping us as we go past.

Local residents questioning the positioning of this camera sent the image to The Advocate to investigate.

They also claim a mobile speed camera often pops up south of Urunga in an even more dangerous blind spot.

“I think the council should be booking them or someone should be,” said one resident, who did not want to be named.

“They are parking in the most ridiculous spots.”

An RTA spokesman said the vehicle in this photograph was parked safely at the end of a parking bay beside the Pacific Highway.

“The RTA has two sites on the Pacific Highway in the vicinity of Short Cut Road which have been approved for mobile speed camera enforcement.”

“The RTA mobile speed camera program has received exemptions to some road rules allowing mobile speed camera operators to park on the side of the road in a manner that will not obstruct a pedestrian or cyclist.

“The RTA is satisfied the operation of the mobile speed camera is being conducted correctly in this area.”

For any other road user, parking in the spot where the vehicle was pictured would result in a fine.
