RSL opens after major facelift in time for Remembrance Day
FINALLY, one of Yeppoon's earliest land marks, the RSL and former CWA Hall, has had a remarkable makeover.
The Yeppoon RSL Sub-branch engaged well-known local builders the Alexander Brothers to do the work. With the total cost of the renovations for both stages approaching $550,000 the Sub-branch's executive was thrilled with the quality of the workmanship.
The renovations are a total makeover with a new modern bar and cool room and draught beer on tap. There is a completely new kitchen, office and training facilities with internet access for members. New toilet facilities include those for the disabled. Future plans include a lift for the disabled with a flat park facility established at the rear of the building.
The Yeppoon RSL will reopen for business on Friday, and members and their guests are encouraged to enjoy the festivities of the first weekend.
"The reopening fits in nicely with our commemorative activities planned for Remembrance Day on Wednesday, November 11 and members are encouraged to attend the commemoration commencing at the Yeppoon Cenotaph at 10.30am," president Chris Penglase said.
Senior vice president Paul Lancaster and chair of the building committee said it had been a "long road" for the RSL Yeppoon Sub-branch.
"There were many members who had been involved in getting it to where we are today," he said.
"Thankfully the decision to proceed was endorsed by members because the former buildings, especially what was known as the CWA Hall, had well and truly reached their use by date. When walls were removed it was clear the building was constructed at a time before cyclone rated structures were compulsory. According to one building inspector, it was a miracle the buildings had survived any cyclone let alone Marcia."
They are taking bookings for the function room, however, Saturday nights in December are booked out. If you're contemplating a birthday party or function and would like to hire the facilities which include use of the kitchen, phone the RSL to make arrangements as soon as possible, Mr Lancaster said.
