Rookie wins on Cup Day

IT was a long way from Flemington but rookie rider Matthew Chadwick finished a winner on Melbourne Cup Day.

The apprentice jockey won the opening race for trainer Trent Greentree at yesterday’s Coffs Harbour non-TAB meeting on Crazy Talk after the well-bred filly had lived up to her name.

The daughter of champion sire Hussonet proved difficult to load into the barriers and was a conspicuous last out of the gates but once Chadwick managed to get her balanced, she left her rivals standing in the straight to win from Coal Fired, ridden by comeback jockey Raymond Spokes and Nova Noir.

Chadwick made it a double in the second race when he picked up a late engagement from trainer Ken Lantry and steered home first emergency Star Of Frisco.

Bianca Rose won the third race of the day, while Cajun Comet saluted in the fourth.

A big crowd was on course to celebrate the race day that stops the nation.
