TALENTED all-rounder Joe Mennie has come a long way since he was a talented teenager plying his trade in Coffs Harbour.

The former Diggers Ex-Services and Northern Districts quick has earned himself a rookie contract with the NSW Speedblitz Blues for the 2010-11 season.

The call up into the State squad was considered a just reward by selectors for the outstanding form that the jovial Mennie has displayed playing for Western Suburbs as well as in the NSW Futures League side over the past 12 months.

The Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association is earning itself a reputation of becoming a nursery for elite cricket talent.

It was only five years ago that another precociously talented teenager was playing for Sawtell and now Phillip Hughes has seven Tests next to his name as well as a truckload of first-class runs.

It’s a long way from a rookie contract to a baggy green but at least Mennie has made the vital first step to cricketing stardom.
