Alex Russell the next big name

DOMINIC Russell sits with his eyes glued to the big screen as his older brother, Alex, takes centre stage.

Sitting in the movie theatre, it’s the first time Dominic, 18, has seen his brother on the silver screen.

Dominic is convinced Alex, who now lives in Hollywood on his “Heath Ledger-like journey to become Australia’s next big name”, is on the early steps to stardom.

The Russell family from Rockhampton were the first to see Alex’s debut film – Wasted on the Young, during an exclusive preview last year.

The Australian film will start screening in capital cities on March 3.

Dominic said Alex, 23, captured the essence of the lead character he played.

“Alex was very convincing to his character, I’m so proud of him,” said Dominic, who recently moved to Brisbane to study journalism and sports.

Wasted on the Young is a story set in an elite high school where Zac, played by Alex, and his step-brother Darren (Oliver Ackland) co-exist on opposite sides of the school hierarchy.

When a party goes dangerously off the rails and Darren’s friend Xandrie (Adelaide Clemens) is left brutally damaged, Darren decides his tormentors have gone too far and will do any thing to expose them.

Alex plays the popular guy who throws parties and is on the school swim team, but his character also has a dark side.

“It’s the complete opposite of what Alex was like in high school,” Dominic said.

“He was bullied and wasn’t very popular at all.

“It was interesting for him to delve into someone he’s nothing like.”

Both Alex and Dominic have been interested in acting from a young age.

Alex also stars in two other films yet to be released, including a low-budget American drama and Australian film Bait.
