Trio will need Champagne effort in Daniel Baker Sprint

OLD friends Champagne Rock, trainer Jim Jarvis and jockey Stephen Traecey will combine for an assault on tomorrow's Coffs Harbour Toyota Daniel Baker Sprint.

The feature race commemorates the young Coffs Harbour jockey who lost his life in a Grafton race fall in 2007 and is one that everybody involved in the local industry dearly wants to win.

This trifecta of mates will need luck.

The horse is making another comeback in its injury-plagued career but when fit, there's a huge motor in that equine chest.

"Possibly it's a tad bit short of the distance that he'd like but you have to give it a go," Jarvis said.

"The horse has had terrible problems with his legs and takes a lot of care and attention to keep him right," he said.

In 2014, Champagne Rock put in a huge effort to run fourth in the Cup but lack of recent racing prompted an attempt at the shorter trip.

At today's Sportsman's meeting, feature event is the Coffs Harbour Office Choice Ken Howard Cup over 2300m and trainer Joanne Hardy will fly the local flag with Heaventomurgatroyd, to be ridden by Stephen Traecey.

The gelded son of Southern Image (USA) ran eighth over 1900m at Kempsey last Saturday and has been crying out for this sort of distance.

However, visiting Scone trainer Rodney Northam holds the key to the race with two runners, He's Dreamin' and Space Invader.

He's Dreamin' hasn't won this campaign but has been a model of consistency with four placings from his past four starts, and Space Invader has barely run past a horse at his past two runs.

Northam feels this race is the perfect occasion for He's Dreamin' to break through for a deserved win.

Robert Thompson takes to ride on the six-year-old and will have specific instructions to save as much petrol as possible.
