HAVE you got what it takes: steady hands, quick reflexes and a passion for the game rock-paper-scissors?

The sixth annual Australian Rock-Paper-Scissors Championship is coming to Yamba, for the first time, on Saturday, April 24.

Characterised by quick reflexes, dexterity, wit and strategy, the game of rock-paper-scissors has been around in various forms for centuries.

Event coordinator Kool Hanz Luke said that Yamba had been selected to host the game because it is a beautiful place and represents regional Australia.

“Being a long weekend, we’re hoping lots of people will come along,” he said.

Several years ago, Kool Hanz Luke recognised the opportunity to create an Australian championship title and the event has continued to grow.

Reigning Australian champion Mick Stewart has agreed to share his hottest tips.

Mick says the key to his success is ability to multi task; one hand supporting a glass of amber fluid and the other hand working independently on the game.

Being able to sum up your opponent quickly is his other hot tip for contenders of the prestigious title.

Actually, when he received the Australian title last year, Mick said it was a surprise.

“I was obviously not expecting to win. It was a happy harmonious event,” he said, adding he was hoping to do it again in 2010.

In addition to the honour, there are several great prizes up for grabs including trips to the Australian Open Grand Final for State Champs and for Australian Champion, the major prize of an overseas trip for one to Toronto, Canada to attend and compete in the ninth annual 2010 World RPS Championships.

“The beauty of this competition is that there are no age or sex barriers, anyone can have a crack,” said Kool Hanz Luke.

Players are encouraged to enter a team or fly solo. Creative fancy dress is also welcome. Entry is free and details are available from Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club on 6646 2305.
