Robert bowls us over with zest

ROBERT Pinney is an unofficial Coffs Harbour ambassador for this year's Seniors Week's theme of Live Life.

The 66-year-old St Augustine's Aged Care resident and artist lives life to the full each day in spite of struggling with the twin challenges of Parkinson's Disease and schizophrenia.

Painting gave the former Associate Professor of Psychology a new way to express himself after he virtually lost the power of conversational speech.

The Live Life theme inspired him to create an artwork to commemorate Seniors Week 2009, March 15-22 and he unveiled his new work The Shattered Bowl on Friday.

He has drawn the title from within Sir Richard Burton's poem The Kasidah:

'The shattered bowl shall know repair; the riven lute shall sound once more; But who shall mend the clay of man, the stolen breath to man restore?'

“The metaphor is a powerful one, representing the 'container' that sustains life,” Robert explained. “We live our lives shaping and being shaped by the potter - the maker of the bowl.”
