RIVALRIES among the local longboard surfing community are set to come to the fore again this week when the State longboard titles start tomorrow.
Many are aware of the competition in the open men’s division between Emerald Beach’s reigning world champion Harley Ingelby and Coffs Harbour’s Jared Neal but it might be Paul Scholten (pictured) who lives around the corner from Ingelby who claims the major prize this week.
Don’t think that it’s only in the open division that the rivalry exists on the waves though.
There’s plenty of tough competition in the older age divisions as well.
Ingelby’s father, Mark, is currently the NSW champion in the over 50s age bracket but it’s another Emerald Beach longboarder who can lay claim to being the national champ.
Glen Mahoney is the holder of that belt but there’s plenty of local talent with aspirations of victory this week.
Sawtell’s Richard Smith is multiple Australian title winner while Paul Guthrie and Ken McCulloch will put their Log Shack friendship aside momentarily when they take to the waves.
If favourable conditions prevail then Park Beach is the expected venue for the week long return to the surfing days of yesteryear.
