RIO 2016: Bronzed Aussies bow out

TRIATHLON: Australian triathlon's medal streak and the record Olympic careers of Emma Moffatt and Erin Densham all ended at Fort Copacabana.

Until yesterday Australia was the only nation to win at least one medal at each Games since triathlon was admitted at Sydney. Women had won all of them.

But Moffatt finished sixth behind American winner Gwen Jorgensen and Densham was 12th.

The two bronze medallists - Moffatt in Beijing and Densham in London - are the first Australian triathletes to compete at three Olympics.

Despite Australia missing the podium for the first time, they were rapt.

Moffatt (above) was going to retire from the Olympics after London but she decided a bike crash in that race was no way to bow out.

She said sixth was better than what she expected.

"There were a few demons with me still from London, crashing on the bike, and that was a course I wasn't worried about,” Moffatt said.

"But coming here, going up and down that hill, it was one of my demons I had to face.

"I'm really glad I practised it at home, going on similar hills and replicating what I could.

"I'm really relieved to get off the bike and onto the run with no bruises or blood.”

Densham was limping noticeably post-race but also could not wipe the smile from her race.

A chronic hamstring injury and health issues had plagued her since London.

"The last four haven't been great - the lead-in, I did absolutely everything I could,” she said.

"I laid it all out there today and I'm so happy with how it went.”

Densham will now work as a triathlon coach at Arizona State University, where Michael Phelps is also a swim coach.

Ashleigh Gentle headlines the next wave of Australians and she was probably the best triathlon medal chance in Rio.

But she missed the lead pack on the swim and finished 26th.

Aaron Royle was ninth and Ryan Bailie took 10th two days earlier - the first time since 2004 that Australian triathlon has had two men in the Olympic top 10.
