Ricciardo open to Ferrari move

MOTORSPORT: After another frustrating season with Red Bull, Australian F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo appears open to a move to Ferrari if the Italian team dumps Kimi Raikkonen, as is being speculated.

The 26-year-old, who hasn’t tasted victory since August 2014, told Autosport he is aware of Ferrari’s interest and “I wouldn’t turn it down”.

“(But) they haven’t made anything clear to me ... other than what’s been said in the media there’s been nothing else, honestly.”

Ricciardo is contracted until the end of 2017.

“There haven’t been any calls saying ‘we’re going to get rid of Kimi, we want you, can you do it with your contract?’ this or that,” he added.

Amid off-track issues Ricciardo’s best-place finish in 2016 is a second at Monaco when he started the race in pole position.

There’s also been four fourth-place finishes, to leave him fifth in the drivers’ championship race.

One of those fourths was due to a strategic error by the Red Bull pit crew in Spain, and was followed by a mix-up in pit lane that cost him the win in Monaco.

“Two weekends in a row now I’ve been screwed. It sucks, and it hurts,” Ricciardo said after the runner-up finish.

A move to Ferrari would see him reunite with former Red Bull teammate and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who was renowned as having a frosty relationship with another Aussie in Mark Webber.

“With his relationship with Mark before I got there, I was ... cautious, with my approach with him as a teammate,” Ricciardo said.

“But he was solid and we actually got on well and obviously the season went better for me than it did for him.

“He never really made excuses and if I beat him he shook my hand like a man and said ‘good race’, so he was a good teammate.

“I like him, he’s a strong guy ... I wouldn’t turn it down.”
