Revved up for rally job
RYAN Fletcher started his apprenticeship as a mechanic in January and has already been selected in Hyundai's support crew for rally driving.
The 18-year-old, who is an apprentice at Skinner Motors (Coffs Harbour Toyota and Hyundai), has been excelling in the Hyundai Apprenticeship Program, much of which is conducted in Sydney at the employer's expense.
Skinner Motors' human resources manager Anne Blair said Ryan had so impressed Hyundai Motor Company Australia that he was selected to be in the support crew in the recent Coffs Harbour round of the Australian Rally Championships.
He is now working at rallies around Australia with the other members of the factory team.
He will travel to Queensland at the end of this month and to Victoria in August as part of the factory support team for local rally driver Mick Gillett and navigator Harvey Smith, who finished 10th overall in the Coffs Harbour rally and
recently competed in South Australia.
Eventually, Ryan would like to drive in rallies himself but meanwhile he is enjoying learning his trade, especially rebuilding engines, as well as driving his own ‘second hand cheapo' car.
“The rallies are awesome,” Ryan said.
“I love the thought of being in a motorsport team.”
