REVEALED: Lightning's first game announced

NETBALL: Three heavyweights of the new Suncorp Super Netball competition will arrive on the Coast next weekend, when Sunshine Coast Lightning will play its first ever match.

The Queensland Firebirds, New South Wales Swifts and GIANTS will feature in four matches at Sunshine Coast Grammar School across Saturday and Sunday.

Lightning will play NSW Swifts on Saturday night (6.45pm) before they face the Giants on Sunday morning (10am).

Firebirds will play GIANTS at 5pm on Saturday and then take on Swifts at 11.45am on Sunday.

Tickets will go on sale on Monday morning (January 9) at 9am on Sunshine Coast Lightning's website.

Lightning will not take on the championship-winning Firebirds, as the two Queensland-based clubs prepare for a Round 1 clash at Boondall on February 18.

Lightning coach Noeline Taurua believes it will be an incredible chance for the new side to test its mettle against an established club (Swifts) and a new club looking to make its mark on the competition (Giants).

"This is a tremendous chance for the playing group to put into practice what we have been working on at training," she said.

"We want to get some cour ttime and better understand which areas we need to work on.

"We know we have got a long way to go to compete with these fantastic clubs and this opportunity to test ourselves against quality opposition is invaulable."

It will be the Coast's first chance to see international netball stars play in their own backyard.

The likes of Romelda Aiken and Gretel Tippett (Firebirds), Kimberlee Green and Serena Guthrie (GIANTS) and, Helen Housby and Paige Hadley (Swifts) could be in action.

More to come.
