Lady Elliot resort lures hopefuls

LADY Elliot Island Eco Resort has received more than 100 applications from people hoping for one of five chances to live, work and play on the island.

The island, nestled at the bottom end of the Great Barrier Reef, has a maximum of about 40 staff each season.

The resort has been on the hunt for a new executive chef, team chef, kitchenhand, waiter and guest services attendant for the past month.

The opportunity to work on the island is rare, with employees staying on the island for 20-day stints before an eight-day break on the mainland.

Assistant resort manager Caroline Hennessey said they had filled three of the five positions after a flood of applications.

“Lady Elliot Island is definitely a magnet for people looking for a Great Barrier Reef experience,” she said.

The first of the successful applicants jetted into the resort less than two weeks ago, while the newest joined the team as a kitchenhand three days ago.

Ms Hennessy said they had so far not been able to find a new executive chef.

“Chefs are, at the moment, in a bit of demand,” she said.

Ms Hennessy said the resort hoped to fill the final positions of executive chef and team chef.

The resort has been ramping up numbers to prepare for the September school holidays and the summer holiday season.

Staff stay in twin share rooms with no more than 28 on the island at a time.

They have access to all the resort activities at discounted rates such as diving, snorkelling, water sports, environmental tours and other activities.
