Resort goes solar to save money

THE penthouse rooftops of the Beachcomber Resort at Mooloolaba used to be a blank canvas to the eye of the eagle.

But they have now been decorated with four six-kilowatt solar panels after a mammoth project that has taken more than a year to finish.

The planning for the installation of the panels on the roofs of four penthouse apartments on the fourth floor of Beachcomber started in February last year.

And after extensive planning, waiting for council approval and rain delays, the project is finally complete.

Mickey Harris, owner of Evolution Solar Sunshine Coast, said the project was a much more complex task than an ordinary residential solar panel installation.

"A frame had to be built on the roof, and we had to get cranes to lift all our equipment on to the fourth floor," he said.

The owner of the four apartments, Ian George, predicted it would take five or six years before he would make his money back.

However, he said the lengthy and expensive project would be worth the cost in the long run.

"I regard it as a long-term project but one that will pay dividends both financially and environmentally," he said.

As well as economical and environmentally sustainable, the solar panel project added some architectural enhancement to the rooftop apartments.

The four penthouses all have additional shade areas on their balconies, thanks to the installation.
