Report: Seafood spat linked to North Korean execution

COULD a spat over seafood be the reason why North Korean ruler Kim Jong-Un had his uncle executed?

The New York Times reports the clash between the country's leader and Jang Sung-taek erupted over who would profit from North Korea's exports of coal, clams and crabs to neighbouring China.

Forces dispatched by Mr Kim to re-take control of key fishing areas were defeated by Mr Jang's own troops, leading the unpredictable ruler to consider his uncle a threat.

Mr Jang and two of his lieutenants were executed using anti-aircraft machine guns early this month.

The official line from North Korea's own news agency is that Mr Jang attempted to overthrow the state.
