Council writes off rate debts

SUNDRY debts totalling almost $10,000 have been written off by the Bellingen Shire Council.

At their meeting yesterday, councillors were asked to approve the writing off of four debts for unpaid rates and charges.

The biggest doubtful debt was for $5331 in relation to unpaid rent at the old Bellingen Caravan Park by the previous contract manager.

Council was told debt recovery procedures had been undertaken and an out-of-court settlement had been successful in reducing but not completely clearing the amount owing.

Another doubtful debt related to an unpaid invoice for just over $2000 for damages sustained to the Dorrigo recreation ground in March 2007.

Although $200 had been forwarded to the council, it had been unable to ascertain who was responsible for the damage.

The council has also been unable to verify the identity of a driver who crashed a car into council property and incurred considerable damages in May 2003.

The cost of legal proceedings relating to that incident amounted to $1333. A debt of $1229 for kerb and guttering in Urunga was also written off after advice that the property owner had died.
