Remember FANs when searching for clues to family history
ARE your ancestors hiding behind their "FANs”?
This was the intriguing topic presented by guest speaker Pauleen Cass at the Caloundra Family History Research general meeting.
Part of the mystery was unravelled when the group learned that "FANs” stands for friends, associates and neighbours.
Pauleen, an historian and genealogist as well as one of the CFHR members, detailed the journey she had taken to discover so much about her family tree. While she has travelled to several overseas countries, much of the information gleaned has been found by following up on contacts made through various forms of media such as letters, telephone calls, blogs, Facebook posts, newspapers, electoral rolls, websites and church records.
"Be brazen,” Pam told her audience.
This attitude, along with an inquiring mind and some detective skills, she said, would go a long way to successful researching.
Members and visitors are welcome at the group's resource rooms at Sunshine Coast Turf Club, Little Mountain. The facilities are wheelchair accessible and open all day on Thursdays (morning only on the third Thursday of the month) and Saturday mornings. Enter at Gate 2 on Pierce Ave, which has plenty of parking.
