Family sizes dropping as fertility rates fall in Coffs
FAMILY sizes are dropping as fertility rates fall and residents of the Coffs Coast region live longer, a new Australian Bureau of Statistics study has revealed.
The ABS Data by region research has compiled a range of data from 2009 to 2013 to paint a picture of life across the country.
It found the Coffs Harbour region had a population of 71,798 in 2013, with 3.9% more women than men.
The median age was 42.6 years, compared to a statewide figure of 37.8 - with the percentage of residents aged 85 or over increasing year-on-year by 16% from 2009 to 2013.
Over the same period, the percentage of residents aged 14 and under dropped from 19.2% to 18.9%.
Professionals led the employment rate, with 17.8% of residents working for the sector, followed by technicians and trades and clerical and administrative workers - both on 14.2%.
Researchers found 12.4% of people living in the Coffs Harbour were born overseas, with United Kingdom, New Zealand and India named the biggest international source region.
Overseas-born residents made up 31.4% of the population across NSW.
The average house built in 2013 was worth $317,000 - less than the state average of $365,000 and the national average of $324,000.
The total number of businesses dropped by 138 in the four year period, from 5609 in 2009 to 5471 in 2013.
Construction was the region's largest industry by number of businesses with 1011, followed by agriculture, forestry and fishing on 590 and rental, hiring and real estate services on 534.
People receiving the Newstart allowance rose by 10.2% to 3291 people, but Youth Allowance dropped by 17.9% to 1352.
The number of registered vehicles rose by 8.3% to 50,640.
Coffs Harbour residents were far more likely to have solar panels on their homes, with 9.7% of households generating their own electricity.
