Regional pathology centres at risk

THE pathology industry lobby group has hit out the Turnbull government's cut to pathology subsidies, branding it "short-sighted".

On Tuesday, Treasurer Scott Morrison announced bulk billing incentives would be stripped from pathology services and cut for diagnostic imaging services to save the government $650 million.

The following day the Australian Medical Association, the Rural Doctors Association and several other health groups warned the cuts could impact on regional services.

Pathology Australia chief Liesel Wett joined the chorus of opposition yesterday, saying the sector could be forced to close pathology collection centres.

She identified "rural and regional laboratories" and hospital-based collection services as prime candidates for closure.
