Region shivers through coldest morning of the year

IT WAS a chilly morning for the Mackay region as the thermostat dropped to three degrees, making today the coldest morning of the year so far, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

BOM forecaster Kimba Wong said Mackay Airport recorded temperatures as low as 3 degrees, while Moranbah shivered at just 1.2 degrees at 5.33am.

"It's the coldest most people have felt all year," Ms Wong said.

In Clermont, temperatures plunged to -1.6.

Ms Wong added residents should expect "cold mornings and cold nights until the weekend".

Ms Wong said a southwesterly had pushed cool dry air up into the sunshine state.

She said the cooler conditions were caused by the cold front in southern states, which resulted in severe weather conditions, including blizzard conditions, damaging winds and wind gusts in New South Wales.
