Red, red wine - this has to be the best way to stay warm

THE shortest day of the year might have come and gone this week, but the cool nights conducive to a good glass of red by the fire are still to come. So which red do you choose? Our wine country is broad, as is the choice of wines and the prices too. There's something for every budget and taste. The Calabria and Hoddles Creek are exceptional value in particular. On the other end of the spectrum, the Margan and Wolf Blass will reward the investment with many years ahead of them. Here's my top 10:

Weekday Warriors:

1. Calabria Private Bin Montepulciano 2013

Lovely full-mouth feel and backed by chalky tannins, it will match a juicy roast lamb shoulder.

Rating: 8.5/10 RRP: $15 Alc: 14%

2. Hoddles Creek Wickhams Road Gippsland Pinot Noir 2015

3. Josef Chromy Pepik Pinot Noir 2015

Lay it down or drink it now:

4. Yalumba Scribbler 2012

5. Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2014

Free Run Press

The palate shows stalky, peppery nuances in fine balance with those ripe fruits, overlaid with a cook's steady hand of just enough spice. Classy. Rating: 9.5/10 RRP: $44 Alc: 14%

6. Brokenwood Sangiovese 2014

Splash out:

7. d'Arenberg The Ironstone Pressings GSM 2012

8. Margan Aged Release Shiraz 2011

2011 was a great year for Hunter Valley reds. This aged release is at the apex of Margan Wines. Incredible scents including blackberry, earthy-meaty savoury notes, pencils and white pepper. Allow for decades of aging potential.

Rating: 9.5/10 RRP: $100 Alc: 13%

9. Eden Road Canberra Syrah 2013

10. Wolf Blass Black Label 2012
