Recipe is right for awards

LIKE a fine souffle, the Coffs Coast is rising to the top of foodies’ heaven.

The region has gained 20 nominations in this year’s Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence and will host the awards night.

Local restaurateurs are excited. Stalwarts of the Bellingen dining scene and an oft winner of ‘Restaurant of the Year’, No. 2 Oak Street Restaurant owner Toni Urquhart is one of the many local operators eager to hear the outcome.

“It is so nice to see other people being nominated,” she said. “It’s a public award and you’re nominated by your peers so it’s pretty amazing.”

The 2010 Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence for the Northern NSW region will be presented to the winners in more than 20 varying categories at a gala dinner on Monday, June 28 at The Novotel Pacific Bay Resort in Coffs Harbour.

Fiasco Ristorante and Bar head chef Stefano Mazzina is quietly confident of retaining the title of Italian Restaurant of the year.

“You never know if you’re going to win or not but I think there is a good chance we will,” he said.

Family business Tandoori Oven owner Colin Chetty is hoping to build on the restaurant’s record of past years.

“If we win Best Indian, it will be four years in a row,” Mr Chetty said.

The anonymous judges will review and evaluate 55 separate criteria including telephone manner, service, quality of food, presentation, cleanliness and the farewell by the restaurant staff. Most importantly, the judge is asked to rate each restaurant as to its value for money proposition.

The title of Best Regional Restaurant and Caterer is announced at the Metropolitan/Regional Awards night to be held on October 11 in Sydney.
