Coffs ready for the big race

STOP PRESS! Viewed gives Bart Cummings his 12th Cup.

IT'S the race that stops the nation, and the Coffs Harbour Racing Club is expecting a bumper crowd to watch the Melbourne Cup today.

Club chief executive officer Russ Atkinson said the club has taken 300 bookings for the local Melbourne Cup Day, with patrons set to pack out the picnic luncheon and the bookies buffet lawn party.

“We're expecting up to 800 people overall, it should be a great day out,” Mr Atkinson said.

The day will feature a five race card starting from 1pm, with doors open at 10am for the first race in Flemington.

Coffs Harbour Racing Club is the only place in town where bookmakers are fielding and the ubiquitous fashions in the field this year are courtesy of Park Beach Plaza.

The Melbourne Cup kicks off at 3pm.
