Reaction to Billy Gordon's violence a form of 'soft bigotry'

A FORMER National Indigenous Council member says the Queensland MP accused of domestic violence should not be given any leeway because of his indigenous heritage.

Wesley Aird feels the response to the allegations against Cook MP Billy Gordon were a version of "soft bigotry".

TODAY IN POLITICAL NEWS:

Mr Aird condemned Mt Isa MP Robbie Katter's comments Mr Gordon's life growing up in an indigenous community should be considered.

Mr Katter said domestic violence was viewed very differently in indigenous communities compared to the rest of Queensland.

Mr Aird also argued against Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's statement during a press conference about anti-domestic violence week that sometimes background needed to be considered.

Although Ms Palaszczuk did not directly refer to Mr Gordon.

During an interview on ABC radio on Friday morning, Mr Aird said as long as Mr Katter and others allowed two standards nothing would get better for indigenous communities.

"What about the victims? What about the wives, what about the daughters, what about the children affected by this?" Mr Aird said.

"They are entitled to just as much protection under the law as any other person."

Mr Aird said he believed Mr Gordon was not delivering the service or acting with the integrity expected of him.

But Mr Aird, who is on the welfare reform reference group, stopped short of saying Mr Gordon should resign.

"A politician's integrity has to be beyond reproach… at the moment it's not looking good," Mr Aird said.
