Water Rats on the hunt to boost their playing ranks
AFTER 41 years on the Warwick rugby union committee, Scotty McLellan is as keen as ever to field a strong Water Rats team in the Darling Downs competition.
He conceded the club needs some new players to ensure a full squad for every game this season.
"A few players are out due to work so we need new recruits, there is a possibility of some more players from Stanthorpe," he said.
Last season, Warwick played C-grade and went down to eventual winners Goondiwindi in the major semi-final and then Chinchilla in the preliminary final.
McLellan said Warwick was again pencilled in to play C-grade in the Darling Downs competition with every second game at home.
"We want to develop A-grade players so we can return to the top grade in the future," he said.
Last year's coach Dave Young, a tall second rower, is available after representing Darling Downs last season.
McLellan expects backline star Matt Wheatley to be one of the senior members of the club this season.
"Matt can play anywhere in the backline and is a top club man and trainer," he said.
Two of the Waugh brothers, Sam and Lincoln, will also play this season.
McLellan has high hopes for a top season from Allora flanker Brad Johnson.
The club will decide on a muster date and appoint a coach at its next meeting this month.
The senior club president has seen the highs and lows of the club.
He was at Briggs Oval when Warwick beat Rangers in the inaugural Risdon Cup grand final in 1964 and at two C-grade and one U19 grand final win.
Warwick made the A-grade grand final in 2000 before struggling for numbers in recent times.
All he wants this year is players keen to proudly wear the black and white of the Water Rats.
