Rapists receive long jail terms

TWO rapists who held a group of Asian students hostage at Park Beach last year and carried out a horrifying and depraved sexual assault on a woman have been sentenced to 25 and 20 years in jail.

Silas Gordon Haines, 31, and Nathan Dungay, 25, pleaded guilty to breaking into an Arthur Street unit in November 2008 and sexually abusing one of the occupants, a 21-year-old Chinese woman.

The Sydney District Court heard yesterday how Haines and Dungay, with accomplice Grahame Quinlan, also assaulted two Vietnamese men, aged 19 and 26, after forcing their way into the house, armed with a knife and a broken bottle in the early hours of November 2.

Judge Colin Charteris described the attack as depraved and horrifying.

Haines, whom he sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment with a minimum 18-year term, was the ringleader of the attack, he said.
