Rapist detained indefinitely

A SERIAL rapist caught on the Mid North Coast earlier this year has been detained in custody indefinitely.

Queensland Attorney-General Kerry Shine on Friday won an application to have Leslie William O'Rourke, 46, held in jail, arguing he could not be trusted to live in the community.

Police arrested O'Rourke on January 15 after receiving information to his whereabouts in Grafton.

He had been on the run from authorities for more than a year after he was released on parole from a fourth jail term for rape.

In a statement, Justice John Bryne said the prospect of O'Rourke complying with conditions, such as abstinence from alcohol and illicit drugs, was remote.

“The adequate protection of the community requires the respondent's continuing detention for control,” Justice Bryne said.
