Rally Australia says show must go on
RALLY Australia have clarified the 2016 World Rally Championship's Australian stage will be held in Coffs Harbour.
The clarification comes as Coffs Harbour City Council last week voted to discontinue sponsorship agreements with Rally Australia this year and in 2017.
Councillor Keith Rhoades is planning to lodge a rescission motion to reverse the decision at the next council meeting on April 28.
Rally Australia senior executive officer, Wayne Kenny said the organisation isn't worried about the future of Rally Australia on the Coffs Coast.
"If they don't pass it (the rescission motion), then we'll approach what we need to do after it happens. Currently, we have no worries about the event going ahead one way or another," Mr Kenny said.
"The rally will be running in Coffs Harbour in 2016 no matter what."
Do you think Coffs Harbour City Council gets value for money from its sponsorship of Rally Australia?
This poll ended on 20 April 2016.
I'd like to see the Rally Australia in Coffs Harbour but I don't think Council should sponsor it.
No, I think Council's money could be better spent.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
The councillors absent at last Thursday's meeting were councillor's Bob Palmer, Rodney Degens and deputy mayor Gary Innes.
Cr Knight said Cr Degens and Innes were upset by the decision while Cr Palmer has yet to respond to the news.
Cr Townley said her decision to vote against sponsoring the event was because of a 'conflict of interest' due to the council's general manager, Steve McGrath's position on Rally Australia's board of directors.
"What I wasn't comfortable with was the second and third parts (of the motion) which was authorising the general manager to execute the deal with Rally Australia which is a proprietary limited company when he is on the board of directors of that company," she said.
However Cr Knight explained under the Local Government Act, Mr McGrath had sub-delegated the financial negotiations to the council's director of financial services in this case.
Although councillors John Arkan, Nan Cowling, Sally Townley and Mark Sultana voted against sponsoring Rally Australia, they voted with Cr Knight and Rhoades for the Draft Coffs Harbour Events Strategy 2020 - of which the Kennard's Rally Australia is a signature event.
