Steamfest's A10 rail journey marks historic milestone

A CROWD of more than 6000 gathered at Grandchester yesterday to celebrate a magnificent milestone in Ipswich and Queensland's railway history.

The Grandchester Community Steamfest event celebrated 150 years since the first train journey from Ipswich to Grandchester, which was also the first in Queensland.

The celebration featured a re-enactment of that first trip, featuring the restored No6 A10 steam train that was first assembled in Ipswich in 1866, as well as an equally well-restored 1956 1079 locomotive nicknamed, "Bety".

The trains brought several hundred guests to the event, and they were greeted by thousands more as they reached Grandchester.
