Raiders stay golden after comeback win over Knights

CANBERRA conjured up an amazing 29-25 golden-point comeback win over Newcastle with a fluky try to winger Jordan Rapana as they moved to the doorstep of the NRL’s top four.

Rapana beat rival winger Nathan Ross in a foot race to a Blake Austin field goal which bounced high in the in-goal and into his teammates hands for the winning try.

It was the biggest comeback of the season after the table-topping Sharks clawed back an 18-0 deficit against the Eels for a club-record 12th straight win on Saturday.

Raiders skipper Jarrod Croker was outstanding in the second half, crossing in the 62nd and 75th minutes to inspire the great escape.

The two teams played out a 24-all scoreline in round three earlier this season before the Raiders snatched a heartbreaking golden-point win.

After 80 minutes in the re-match the scores were locked 25-all after Austin and then Knights halfback Trent Hodkinson traded field goals within the space of a minute to propel the clash into golden point.

Sezer and Austin both missed field goal attempts before Austin’s second shot popped up perfectly for Rapana to plunge a knife into the Knights’ hearts.

Newcastle looked on target to produce the upset of the season and score its first away win when scoring four tries in the first 25 minutes to race to a 22-0 lead.

Canberra’s win moves it to 21 premiership points, one behind the fourth-placed Bulldogs.
