Race meeting amid sports events abandoned due to weather

RACING: Persistent rain forced the abandonment of the Sunshine Coast meeting yesterday.

Stewards inspected the track in the morning, deeming it to be unsafe for racing, due to surface water on the track.

Racing Queensland said they will give consideration to programming potential alternatives during the next 7-10 days.

The meeting was one of several Sunshine Coast sports events cancelled during the weekend.

The annual three-day Noosa International Sevens Rugby Festival, which attracts droves of teams, was stopped in its tracks after day one fixtures were washed out.

Organisers said they would look to run part of the event at a future date.

Cricket matches were hampered by rain, including Sunshine Coast division one matches and the Queensland Premier Grade clash involving the Sunshine Coast Scorchers.

The Sunshine Coast Masters Football Tournament at Buderim, a Sunshine Coast branch junior surf lifesaving carnival at Rainbow Beach and junior rugby league games featuring Sunshine Coast Falcons development players at Maroochydore were also cruelled by the weather.
