Rabbitohs ready for run to finals, says Fuimaono

RUGBY LEAGUE: South Sydney players insist they remain a finals hope despite their lowly position on the NRL ladder.

The Rabbitohs are languishing in 12th position and to have any chance of making the finals will likely need to win at least six of their remaining eight games, beginning with Sunday's clash against North Queensland in Cairns.

Friday night's 14-12 loss to an understrength Sydney Roosters was their 10th of the season but despite being six points outside the top eight, Rabbitohs players are confident they can avoid a second straight early exit from the competition.

"I don't think (our season is over)," forward Tyrell Fuimaono said.

"I have full belief in our team and I think we can pull together and put our best performance in.

"We've done it previously, come off a loss and looked at ourselves and thought we really need to win this weekend."

The Cowboys clash shapes a crucial match for Souths who also tackle premiership favourites Melbourne and Cronulla in their run home.

Meanwhile, a South Sydney official confirmed on Wednesday that former Queensland State of Origin centre Dane Nielsen had been released by the club.

Nielsen, who signed with the Bunnies in 2015 after stints at the Storm, Warriors and Dragons, had not played first grade since the end of last season.
