Quick action by firefighters
A FIERCE blaze sparked by fallen powerlines threatened Red Rock village early yesterday.
Gale-force winds sent the lines crashing to the ground alongside Red Rock Road about 500 metres west of the township.
Woolgoolga Fire Station commander Ray Webb said his crews were called out at 1.17am.
They were joined at the scene by firefighters from Coffs Harbour and Sawtell who were needed to support the Rural Fire Service units which had also converged on the area.
Mr Webb said the powerlines fell into a paddock on the northern side of the road, setting heathland alight.
Firefighters at one stage feared the flames could engulf the Red Rock Community Centre and homes in nearby Flaherty Street but crews worked for more than two hours to extinguish the fire and save lives and property.
The blaze consumed as much as one hectare of heath.
Mr Webb reported extensive blackouts in the area.
